Should You Have ACL Surgery? It Depends on the Life You Need Back
Video masterclass
Mum Overcomes ACL Surgery
Linda tore her ACL and meniscus on a tornado kick. Mum of three. Two years later she’s training again — and she can sprint for a forgotten bandana. Her story. Watch the full session below — then open the video page for notes, timestamps, and related guides.
Mastery program
The ACL Comeback Program
A structured 28-day knee rehab program designed for people stuck in the "almost better" phase after ACL or meniscus injury. Rebuild strength, restore confidence, and bridge the gap between feeling okay and being fully back.

The question isn’t “does everyone need a graft?”
A lot of people don’t think surgery is necessary. They’re not wrong as a general statement. You can live without reconstructing an ACL. We said that on camera. Linda said it too.
The thing we actually consider is the type of life you need to get back to. For Linda that was not a theoretical “return to sport.” It was: back into martial arts, back into training, HIIT, strength — and to run around and play with her kids without the fear that the knee is going to buckle or that there will be pain.
Grant a surgeon those goals plus that scan, and the orthopaedic review is an easy decision. The operation is still a hard month. Hear her say it in Mum Overcomes ACL Surgery. Watch on YouTube.
Want a structured program, not just an article?
This guide gives you the framework. The ACL Comeback Program ($50) is our 28-day lower-limb strength block for the “almost better” phase — when you can walk and do daily life but need progressive loading before you trust running again. Pair it with the free Knee Pain Mastery Guide for day-to-day exercises.
What she was most afraid of losing
Mobility. The ability to do everything she was doing before. She felt that if she wanted classes and an active life with the kids, surgery mattered so it wouldn’t sit in the back of her mind: oh my god, my knee’s going to buckle.
That’s the psychological part everyone skips. They see the physical. They don’t clock what it does to you when you can walk, run, jump, skip, kick, kneel, sit cross-legged one day — and you can’t the next. Or it takes a year to get those things back one at a time.

Want this protocol mapped to your injury, scan and timeline? Our Online Rehab Academy pairs video-guided rehab with remote coaching from our clinical team — the same standards as in-clinic care, from home.
How we talk about this in clinic
- What does a normal week actually demand? Playground, mats, court, stairs with shopping, kneeling at a dance concert.
- Has the knee given way since? Locking or clicking that matches meniscus?
- Are you trying to protect a timeline (grading, a season, a trip) or a lifetime?
- Have you had an honest surgical consult — not a forum vote?
If your answer is “I just don’t want to think about it,” that’s not a rehab plan. That’s how people limp through two years of modified life and call it fine.

The ACL Comeback Program is our paid 28-day lower-limb strength and confidence block ($50). We use it for ACL and meniscus rehabs — and for athletes stuck in the “almost better” phase after knee sprain, giving-way, or a long layoff from running and court sport. It is built for the whole lower limb, not only post-op ACL.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have to have ACL surgery?
No. Plenty of people live without a reconstruction if their life is walking, cycling and straight-line work. The question is the life you need back — cutting, kicking, jumping, chasing kids on unpredictable ground.
Why was Linda’s decision “easy”?
Not because surgery is easy. Because her goals were clear: martial arts, strength and HIIT, and running around with three kids without fearing the knee would buckle. Those goals plus that scan made an orthopaedic review the honest next step.
What if I just want to walk and play with my kids?
That’s still a real demand. Kids don’t move in straight lines. Giving-way on a playground is a different risk than giving-way on a treadmill. We still map the actual week you live, not a brochure.
Does physio decide the operation?
No. The surgeon operates. We help you get to the right consult with a clear picture of your sport, your job and your family — and we do the prehab and rehab either side.
I already had the graft. Is this still relevant?
Yes — because the same question shows up later: what life are we training you for? The five exercises and the confidence work only make sense against that answer.
