Mum Overcomes ACL Surgery

Linda tore her ACL and meniscus on a tornado kick. Mum of three. Two years later she’s training again — and she can sprint for a forgotten bandana. Her story. Watch the full session below — then open the video page for notes, timestamps, and related guides.

Mastery program

The ACL Comeback Program

A structured 28-day knee rehab program designed for people stuck in the "almost better" phase after ACL or meniscus injury. Rebuild strength, restore confidence, and bridge the gap between feeling okay and being fully back.

She buried her face in the floor

Linda was already on fire in the gym. Strength classes. HIIT. Martial arts. She’d graded. Then one night in striking, people were hyping each other up — too hard, too fast, too high. A tornado kick landed badly.

She remembered the landing. She buried her face in the floor so nobody would see her in pain. A lot of people thought she was mucking around until she didn’t get up.

I was treating in the clinic room. Mike knocked: one of the mums just hurt herself. I came out and thought, oh my god, it’s our superstar. From what I could gather it looked like meniscus, maybe ACL. You don’t diagnose that on a mats-side chat. First jobs: crutches (we went across the road — we didn’t have a pair in the clinic that night) and a scan.

Want a structured program, not just an article?

This guide gives you the framework. The ACL Comeback Program ($50) is our 28-day lower-limb strength block for the “almost better” phase — when you can walk and do daily life but need progressive loading before you trust running again. Pair it with the free Knee Pain Mastery Guide for day-to-day exercises.

“It’s just a sprain. I’ll be fine in a week.”

That’s what she was thinking while it was still painful. Denial is not stupidity. Denial is how you keep the life you had yesterday. Walking out of here on crutches, she got outside, tears started. In the car: I can’t believe I’ve hurt myself. How am I going to do classes again?

Injury Wednesday. MRI Friday. Results Monday or Tuesday. The report said tear. She said sprain. Still a sprain. That’s when we sent her for an orthopaedic consult. The surgeon had a slot in a month.

Then the ugly bit nobody puts on Instagram: walk on crutches, get off crutches, build enough strength to have surgery — then do it all over again.

What the scan actually said

When I saw the results: ACL rupture — complete tear. Meniscus damage, the kind that can click or lock, so that part typically has to be trimmed. A bony contusion, even a micro-fracture. And a strain. She was right that there was a strain. It was also a very intense injury.

If you are currently telling yourself “sprain” because the alternative is a year of your life, get the imaging and sit with a clinician who will tell you the truth. Hope is not a scan.

The first thought wasn’t “will I walk?”

It was how do I stay active? That’s the parent and the martial artist talking. Related: why we sent her for surgery and the full story.

The ACL Comeback Program is our paid 28-day lower-limb strength and confidence block ($50). We use it for ACL and meniscus rehabs — and for athletes stuck in the “almost better” phase after knee sprain, giving-way, or a long layoff from running and court sport. It is built for the whole lower limb, not only post-op ACL.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an ACL rupture feel like a sprain at first?

Yes. Plenty of people walk out (or limp out) telling themselves it’s “just a sprain.” Swelling, giving-way and a mechanism like a bad landing or twist are reasons to get scanned — not to wait a week and hope.

What did Linda’s scan actually show?

ACL rupture (complete tear), meniscus damage that can click or lock, a bony contusion / micro-fracture, and a strain. She was right that there was a strain. She was not right that it was only a strain.

Should I keep training if I think it’s a sprain?

If the knee gave way, you couldn’t get up, or someone had to fetch crutches, stop. Train around it only after a clinician has cleared the joint. “I’ll be fine in a week” is how a meniscus gets chewed.

When should I get an MRI after a knee injury?

When the story and the exam say more than a simple sprain: inability to weight-bear, true giving-way, locked knee, or a high-energy twist/landing. Linda’s MRI was that Friday; results early the next week.

Is this the same as the 5-exercises video?

No. That video is the gym list. This one is the night it happened, the denial, and the walk to the car. The drills are here: the 5 best exercises after ACL surgery.
