Mum Overcomes ACL Surgery
How Linda got back to training, martial arts and her kids
Linda tore her ACL and meniscus on a tornado kick. Mum of three. Two years later she’s training again — and she can sprint for a forgotten bandana. Her story.
Hey everyone — Linda is in. Two years ago she had surgery on her ACL and meniscus. She’s a parent of three very active kids. If you’ve injured yourself and you want an active life back, this is her story.
Linda had already been training with us — strength, HIIT, martial arts — and she’d graded. Then one night in striking, a tornado kick landed badly. She buried her face in the floor so nobody would see. People thought she was joking until she didn’t get up.
What she thought it was
Denial. “It’s just a sprain. I’ll be fine in a week.” MRI said tear. She kept saying sprain. The scan was an ACL rupture, meniscus damage, a bony contusion, and yes — a strain as well. A very intense injury.
The first thought walking out on crutches: how do I stay active? How do I do classes again?
Why surgery
You can live without the operation. Linda wanted classes, and she wanted to run around with her kids without the knee buckling. That made the orthopaedic review an easy decision — not because everyone needs a graft, because of the life she was going back to.
What she was most afraid of losing: mobility. Everything she took for granted. Walking, running, jumping, skipping, kicking, kneeling, sitting cross-legged — gone in a night.
Coming back to herself
There wasn’t one cinematic moment. Every milestone loaded the bar a little more. Off crutches. Limp gone. Running. Kicking. Kneeling. Crossing her legs without thinking. Jumping is still a work in progress.
Think of it like a video game. Get off crutches — bar fills. Full extension — a bit more. Jogging — a bit more. You don’t just return to who you were. You come back stronger if you take the lessons.
Rehab that fits a family
Three kids: soccer, martial arts, competitive dance, and a four-year-old who runs everywhere. Ten months post-op she was in America for a dance comp, doing her exercises in the audience while the other mums asked what she was doing. A year later they sprinted to Walmart for a forgotten bandana. That’s the difference 12 months of dedication makes.
Don’t put yourself last
Young parents stack the kids, the activities, school, work — then themselves. If you want to look after your family, look after yourself first. If you’re not around, who does everything?
Linda’s advice: come in, get checked. Don’t put it off. You’re not getting younger.
The mental layer
