Coming Back to Yourself After ACL Surgery (There Isn’t One Big Moment)
Video masterclass
Mum Overcomes ACL Surgery
Linda tore her ACL and meniscus on a tornado kick. Mum of three. Two years later she’s training again — and she can sprint for a forgotten bandana. Her story. Watch the full session below — then open the video page for notes, timestamps, and related guides.
Mastery program
The ACL Comeback Program
A structured 28-day knee rehab program designed for people stuck in the "almost better" phase after ACL or meniscus injury. Rebuild strength, restore confidence, and bridge the gap between feeling okay and being fully back.

There wasn’t a specific moment
I asked Linda if there was a day she realised I’m finally me again. She said no. Every time she achieved something, she felt more like herself.
First: getting off crutches. She’d been walking with a limp because she couldn’t fully extend the leg. Once she could walk without crutches and without the limp — a bit more herself. Then running. Jumping is scary. She still doesn’t like jumping. Work in progress. Kicking was scary; she can do that now. Kneeling was scary. Sitting cross-legged was hard. Only recently could she kneel and cross her legs without thinking. Before that, one leg out.
That’s the honest timeline of “return.” Not a certificate. A stack of ordinary positions you used to not notice. Hear it in Mum Overcomes ACL Surgery. Watch on YouTube.
Want a structured program, not just an article?
This guide gives you the framework. The ACL Comeback Program ($50) is our 28-day lower-limb strength block for the “almost better” phase — when you can walk and do daily life but need progressive loading before you trust running again. Pair it with the free Knee Pain Mastery Guide for day-to-day exercises.
The video-game bar
Think of it like a bar that loads. Off crutches — a little. Full extension — a little more. Back into jogging — a little more. You are slowly coming back to who you were. I would say you’re coming back and becoming someone even stronger.
Everything happens for a reason is a line people hate until they have to use it. If you take the lessons out of what happened, you get wiser as well as stronger. If you only wait to feel like the old you, you will miss the person who can now sprint for a bandana in 40-degree heat because she stayed in the work.

What she struggled with most
Not a Google diagnosis (ChatGPT barely existed when she tore it). Not “the pain” as the headline. Getting the confidence back to do everything she took for granted — then lost.
That’s different from cleared and still afraid to play. This is earlier and smaller: can I kneel at a concert without planning the exit. Pair it with kneeling and sitting cross-legged after ACL.
When I tore my patella tendon I would warm up, hit the treadmill, decide my knee was sore, and drive home. Sometimes I doom-scrolled in the car park and left. Linda is significantly stronger than that version of me. Accountability through the tears is part of why she stayed.
If the identity lag is the main problem, start Brick By Brick — the 7-week series I wish I’d had.

The ACL Comeback Program is our paid 28-day lower-limb strength and confidence block ($50). We use it for ACL and meniscus rehabs — and for athletes stuck in the “almost better” phase after knee sprain, giving-way, or a long layoff from running and court sport. It is built for the whole lower limb, not only post-op ACL.

Frequently Asked Questions
When will I feel like myself after ACL surgery?
Usually not on one date. Linda’s version: every time she achieved something, she felt more like herself. Off crutches. No limp. Running. Kicking. Kneeling without thinking. The bar fills in pieces.
What if jumping still scares me years later?
Normal. Linda still doesn’t love jumping. That’s a work in progress — which is why landing practice belongs in the program, not in a once-off “you’re cleared” speech. See our landing after ACL guide.
Is the video-game bar a real protocol?
It’s a picture, not a scoreboard. The point is that identity returns through evidence: you did the thing, the knee held, you file it. Waiting for a movie moment is how people stay injured in their head.
What’s the first milestone that actually matters?
The unglamorous ones. Full extension. Walking without a limp. Getting off crutches. Those are the ones Linda named first — not a grading or a holiday.
How does Brick By Brick fit?
The body can move while you still see yourself as injured. The 7-week series is the mental layer we didn’t have when I tore my patella tendon. Start at /brickbybrick.
