Brick By Brick: The Story Behind the Book

Why Brick By Brick exists: the patterns behind chronic pain, the three pillars of recovery, and why rebuilding takes seven weeks instead of one sitting. Watch the full session below — then open the video page for notes, timestamps, and related guides.

A year in the making

Seven videos filmed across six months starting last July. A break. Then four to five months on the workbook. This conversation with Matt is the retrospective on all of it — watch on YouTube.

It started as a pattern, not a plan

The origin was practical: getting comfortable speaking for long stretches before the course existed. But working with online clients surfaced something more interesting. Regardless of whether the complaint was a back, a knee or a shoulder, the people stuck in long-term pain shared two things.

They lacked confidence. And they were letting a diagnosis become a label they carried — “I’ve got shoulder bursitis, had it for ten years, it comes and goes, never gets better.” The evidence on disc bulges says otherwise →

The three pillars

Recovery has three parts, and most rehab only addresses one:

  • Physical — the actual injury. Torn ACL, bursitis, torn muscle or ligament, broken bone.
  • Mental and psychological — confidence, anxiety, fear, hesitation.
  • Spiritual, or heart — the drive. Think of everyone who returned to sport after ACL surgery but never played with the same intensity or passion again.

Tackle all three or the comeback stays fragile. More on this in physical, mental and spiritual recovery.

Why it’s called Brick By Brick

Because we live in an age of same-day delivery and food in minutes, and that expectation quietly leaks into how people think recovery should work. It doesn’t work that way.

Rome wasn’t built in a day — so why pressure yourself to recover in one? The name is the instruction: slow down, take the lessons, and let it happen. What is the point of the journey if you never look at anything on the way?

The one rule: don’t binge it

Watching all seven videos in a night like a Netflix series, or reading the whole book in a day, defeats the design. The goal is one chapter a week. It’s self-guided and you go at your own pace, but the pace is the point — the book is interactive, full of reflection questions, and you have to actually do the work.

There’s a line from Profound Pondering that sums up the target: if you keep carrying the same bricks, you will build the same house. Seven weeks of new bricks gets you a new house.

Who it’s for

Not only injured athletes. Anyone who’s been injured, been through heartbreak, lost a job, had a season end, been through something traumatic, or hit rock bottom. More on who it was written for →

Chapter one is Welcome to Rock Bottom, because the first brick is acceptance — and the useful thing about rock bottom is there’s only one way up.

On belief

The quote from the episode, by way of Will Smith: he who says he can and he who says he can’t are both usually right. If you believe you’ll always be in pain, that you’ll never get back to sport, never pick up your kids — that belief does most of the work before rehab starts.

That doesn’t mean doubt disappears. Matt’s ankle took a year and he had doubts the whole way. His story is here → The job is living with the doubts without handing them the wheel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Brick By Brick?

A free seven-week video series plus an optional printed workbook, built for anyone rebuilding after injury or setback. Around 25 minutes of video a week, self-guided, at your own pace.

Why seven weeks instead of reading it in one sitting?

Because recovery isn’t done in a day and it’s progressive. The goal is one chapter a week — hence the name. Watching all seven in one night, or reading the whole book in one day, skips the reflection the exercises depend on.

What are the three pillars of recovery?

Physical (the actual injury — torn ACL, bursitis, broken bone), mental and psychological (confidence, anxiety, fear, hesitation), and spiritual or heart (the drive, intensity and passion that make you the same player you were). Recover all three or the comeback stays fragile.

How long did it take to make?

About a year. Seven videos filmed over six months from July, a short break, then roughly four to five months on the workbook.

Is it free?

Yes — the seven-week series is free at /brickbybrick, with Week 1 playing on the landing page without sign-up. The printed workbook is optional and available on Amazon.
