Rehab is not 100% physical

Most people treat injury like a body problem only: ice, scans, exercises, “when can I play?” That layer matters — movement, strength, power, speed, tissue capacity. But in clinic we keep seeing the same pattern: the body improves while the person still hesitates.

In How to Guarantee You Come Back Stronger, we break healing into three planes that all need work at the same time.

1. Physical (~33%)

Pain, swelling, range, strength, power, sport-specific capacity. This is classic physiotherapy — progressive loading, objective markers, return-to-run / return-to-sport criteria. Without it, nothing else sticks.

2. Mental (~33%)

Stress, anxiety, pressure, fear of reinjury, PTSD-like responses, psychological readiness, confidence. This is why athletes who “look fine” still hesitate on the ball, pull out of sessions, or spiral after a small flare-up.

3. Spiritual / heart (~33%)

Desire. Hunger. The part of you that actually wants the return — not the part that books physio because someone told you to. When that layer is dented, athletes say things like: “I want it… but I don’t want it that bad.” That dent in identity and meaning is what turns a setback into a statistic — or into a rebuild.

Why all three together

Think of Japanese kintsugi — broken pottery repaired with gold. The break becomes part of the story. Physical rehab glues the structure. Mental work stops the fear from cracking it again. Spiritual work decides whether you treat the gold as shame or as strength.

Practical next steps

  • Rate yourself 0–10 this week on physical capacity, mental confidence, and desire to return.
  • Pick the lowest score and give it a concrete action (session, exposure, journaling, conversation).
  • Watch the full talk: YouTube or video library.
  • Run the mindset layer in sequence with Brick By Brick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is “spiritual” recovery religious?

Not necessarily. In this framework it means desire, meaning, heart and the will to return — the part that decides whether rehab is a chore or a mission. Some people connect that to faith; others to purpose and identity.

Can I just focus on physio exercises?

You can — and many people do. But if confidence, stress, PTSD-like fear, or a flat desire to return aren’t addressed, physical gains often stall or don’t transfer back to sport.
