Brick By Brick Isn’t Only for Injured Athletes
Video masterclass
Brick By Brick: The Story Behind the Book
Why Brick By Brick exists: the patterns behind chronic pain, the three pillars of recovery, and why rebuilding takes seven weeks instead of one sitting. Watch the full session below — then open the video page for notes, timestamps, and related guides.
The question that comes up most
Is this only for injured athletes? It isn’t — and in the Brick By Brick episode that’s answered directly. Watch on YouTube.
It’s for anyone who has been injured, gone through heartbreak, lost a job, had their season end, been through something traumatic, or found themselves at rock bottom.
Why the same framework fits all of them
Because the shape of the problem is the same even when the cause isn’t. Something you relied on is gone. Confidence goes with it. The version of yourself you recognised stops being available, and you’re left deciding whether to wait for it to come back or build a different one.
A torn ACL and a relationship ending look nothing alike from the outside. From the inside — the loss of a routine, an identity and a plan — they run remarkably parallel.
Welcome to rock bottom
Chapter one was nearly chapter zero before it got renamed. It’s called Welcome to Rock Bottom, and the argument is short: the first step in recovery is acceptance, and the beautiful thing about rock bottom is there’s only one way up.
Step one is accepting where you are. Step two is looking forward — what can you learn from this, and what does the plan look like from here. Acceptance without the second half is just sitting at the bottom with better framing.
The author’s version of it
This isn’t theoretical. A torn patella tendon, heartbreak, depression, anxiety, medication, sixteen to eighteen kilos gained. A lot going wrong at once.
The line from the episode: glad all those things went wrong just so this one could go right. Without the heartbreak, the depression and the rest, there’s no Evolve Physio and no book.
Where to start
- Name what actually collapsed — the activity, the relationship, the role, the plan.
- Accept it as the current position rather than the permanent one.
- Work out the lesson and the next step, in that order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be injured to get anything from it?
No. It’s built for anyone who’s been injured, gone through heartbreak, lost a job, had a season end, been through something traumatic, or hit rock bottom. The mechanics of rebuilding are the same.
Why does it start with rock bottom?
Because the first step in recovery is acceptance, and the useful thing about rock bottom is there’s only one way up. Chapter one is called Welcome to Rock Bottom for that reason.
What comes after acceptance?
Looking forward: what can you learn from the experience, and what’s the plan from here. Acceptance on its own is just a stop — it has to lead somewhere.
Where is this in the video?
The “who this book was written for” chapter, about 14:46 to 15:29 (https://youtu.be/wfOG6tsP_uo).
