Stop Waiting for Things to Get Better

Stop waiting for things to get better. Three steps to overcome pain: create an end goal, face what happens if you don’t, then flip fear into courage now. Watch the full session below — then open the video page for notes, timestamps, and related guides.

We live in a world of instant gratification

Order something in the morning, it’s at your house in a couple of hours. Food in 20 minutes while you stay on the couch. A scroll later, someone else’s ACL reconstruction is already back on the park — and you get a little hit of satisfaction from their story.

That’s why step two of Stop waiting for things to get better is controversial on purpose: what happens if you don’t achieve it? What happens if you don’t change?

Go deeper than “I’ll still be in pain”

Most people stop at the body: stiff knee, unstable back, “it’ll never be the same.” We need to mine underneath that.

  • Are you okay with never being completely confident — always a bit of doubt, hesitation, anxiety?
  • Are you okay never kicking a ball around with your friends?
  • Are you okay never being the parent who can actually play at the park?
  • Are you okay watching the group chat light up for a Blue Mountains hike and typing “I can’t — my knee isn’t 100%”?

If you are okay with that life, that’s your call. If you’re not, this is the moment the work starts.

Put that energy back into yourself

It’s easy to celebrate someone else pushing past their fear. It’s harder to show up for the most important person in your own life — you. Instant gratification will keep feeding you other people’s wins. Step two asks you to stop outsourcing the story.

Then you flip it. That’s polarity — step three.

Frequently Asked Questions

Isn’t this just negative thinking?

No. Positive reinforcement is useful — and incomplete. When you’re trapped in fear, anxiety and hesitation, you also need to see the cost of staying the same. That’s how the decision to change gets real.

I already know I’ll still be in pain if I don’t rehab. Isn’t that enough?

That’s the surface. Go deeper: never fully confident, never kicking a ball with friends, never playing with your kids, never saying yes to the Sunday hike. Those scenes are what actually move people.
