Self-Belief After Injury: Escaping the Beliefs That Keep You Stuck
The world's greatest prison isn't your body
Week 3 of Brick By Brick is titled Escaping The World's Greatest Prison — and the prison is belief. Not the injury itself, but the stories your mind attaches to it: what you can't do, what you shouldn't try, who you're allowed to be now.
Spot the stories
Listen to your internal dialogue for a day. How often does injury explain your choices? How often do you pre-empt failure before attempting? Those repetitions aren't facts — they're beliefs worn into grooves.
- Belief: "One wrong move and I'm back to square one." Reality check: Tissues adapt to graded load; total protection prevents adaptation.
- Belief: "I'm damaged goods." Reality check: Injury is common; full functional recovery is the norm when rehab is done properly.
- Belief: "I'll believe it when I see it." Reality check: Often you see it when you believe enough to act.
Rebuild belief before capacity
Most rehab programs jump straight to exercises. Brick By Brick argues you need belief scaffolding first — or you'll sabotage the physical work unconsciously. Week 3 gives you that layer. Then Weeks 4–7 build identity, discipline, courage, and closure on top.

Brick By Brick is free — seven weeks, ~25 minutes of video each. Week 1 plays without sign-up on the landing page. Pair videos with the Amazon workbook for written reflection exercises.
Physio for the physical layer
Belief work sits alongside hands-on rehab. Book at Evolve Physio in Cabramatta for assessment and a structured return plan. See our return to running guide if running is your goal.

Coming soon: Evolve Online Rehab Academy
We're opening our Online Rehab Academy soon — a full recovery platform for people rebuilding after knee or low back injury. Brick By Brick handles the mindset and identity layer; the Academy is where guided physical recovery, coaching, and community come together.
Here's what we're building:
- 1-to-1 and group recovery calls — live support with practitioners who know your story, not a generic program and good luck.
- Knee and low back focus — tailored pathways for the two areas we treat most in clinic.
- Guided programs with coaching check-ins — your plan adjusts as you progress, with scheduled calls to review how you're tracking.
- A community that understands — people who know what setback feels like and want to support each other through it.
- Multiple practitioners, different niches — the right expertise for your goal, whether that's return to sport, work, or daily life without pain.
- A dedicated app — direct communication with your team, video demos of every exercise, consistency tracking, and a log for reps, sets, weights lifted, and notes after each recovery session.
Enrolments aren't open yet. If knee or back recovery is your priority, book a clinic assessment or contact us and mention the Online Rehab Academy — we'll let you know the moment we launch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can beliefs really block physical recovery?
Yes. Fear-avoidance, catastrophising, and low self-efficacy predict worse outcomes independent of tissue damage. Belief shapes behaviour — and behaviour shapes tissue adaptation.
What beliefs are most common after injury?
'I'll never be the same,' 'If I push I'll break again,' 'My body betrays me,' 'I'm too old to come back.' Week 3 helps you spot yours without judgment.
Should I rebuild belief before or after physio?
Both, in parallel. Belief without capacity is fantasy; capacity without belief is underperformance. Week 3 focuses on the belief side while your physio handles the physical side.
