The 'Injured' Identity: Why You Were Never Meant to Stay Broken
When the injury becomes who you are
There's a difference between having an injury and being injured. The first is temporary. The second becomes an identity — and identities are sticky. You start declining invitations. You stop trying. You introduce yourself through the lens of limitation.
Week 4: You Were Never Meant To Stay Broken in Brick By Brick tackles this head-on. Release the label of "the injured one." Step toward the identity you're rebuilding toward.
How the shift happens
- Notice the language. "I am broken" vs. "I'm rebuilding." Words shape identity.
- Separate then from now. Pre-injury you isn't gone — but post-injury you isn't defined only by damage.
- Take one action as the new you. Identity follows behaviour more often than the reverse.
We built this course because clinic work alone couldn't reach the identity layer. You can have perfect biomechanics and still live small if you believe you're permanently diminished.
Week 4 in the seven-week arc
Weeks 1–3 establish ground zero, name what was lost, and rebuild belief. Week 4 is the pivot — from injury as identity to injury as chapter. Weeks 5–7 add discipline, face the monsters, and close with detachment.

Coming soon: Evolve Online Rehab Academy
We're opening our Online Rehab Academy soon — a full recovery platform for people rebuilding after knee or low back injury. Brick By Brick handles the mindset and identity layer; the Academy is where guided physical recovery, coaching, and community come together.
Here's what we're building:
- 1-to-1 and group recovery calls — live support with practitioners who know your story, not a generic program and good luck.
- Knee and low back focus — tailored pathways for the two areas we treat most in clinic.
- Guided programs with coaching check-ins — your plan adjusts as you progress, with scheduled calls to review how you're tracking.
- A community that understands — people who know what setback feels like and want to support each other through it.
- Multiple practitioners, different niches — the right expertise for your goal, whether that's return to sport, work, or daily life without pain.
- A dedicated app — direct communication with your team, video demos of every exercise, consistency tracking, and a log for reps, sets, weights lifted, and notes after each recovery session.
Enrolments aren't open yet. If knee or back recovery is your priority, book a clinic assessment or contact us and mention the Online Rehab Academy — we'll let you know the moment we launch.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an 'injured identity'?
It's when injury shifts from an event in your past to a core part of how you see yourself — 'I'm the one with the bad back,' 'I'm not a runner anymore,' 'I can't trust my body.' That identity shapes every decision even after tissues heal.
Can physio fix an identity problem?
Physio fixes tissue. Identity work is separate — though the two interact constantly. That's why Brick By Brick exists alongside clinical rehab, not instead of it.
How long does it take to shed the injured label?
There's no fixed timeline. Week 4 gives you the framework; Weeks 5–7 build on it. Some people feel a shift in weeks; others need months of consistent work.
