Surgeon Said It’s Cooked: Shut Down — or Accept the Challenge?
When every opinion is a brick in the cage
In Episode 2, a client with years of back pain, disc bulges, on-off sciatica, weakness and stiffness just wants a strong back to play with his kids. What he hears:
- Surgeon: one of the worst backs he’s seen — cooked
- GP: copies the fear
- Other practitioners: more doom (the episode’s comic stack of “don’t breathe / six toes” energy)
Most people shut down: why bother? That’s the prison door closing from the inside.
The Cycle of Pain
When limiting messages repeat, they become belief — then behaviour. The workbook names the loop: do nothing → get weaker → get stiffer → get more fearful → world shrinks → do nothing again. Somewhere in that noise you need one internal line: my story isn’t over — I have to turn the page.
Always two choices
- Do what most people do — shut down, accept defeat.
- Accept the challenge — decide to get better. Not overnight. Decision first.
You are changing your own life
I’m not changing your life. Matt isn’t changing your life. You are changing your own life. We support you. We believe in you. Don’t ever give that power to someone else.
That’s the belief-before-capacity point in Brick By Brick language: capacity plans fail when the mind has already surrendered.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the two choices after a stack of negative opinions?
1) Shut down, accept defeat, treat this as your new life. 2) Accept the challenge and decide to come back — without needing to build Rome in a day.
Who actually changes your life in this framework?
You. Shranal and Matt support, believe, and coach — but you don’t hand them the power. “The same rope that people use to pull you up is the same rope they can hang you with.”
Does this mean ignore surgeons?
No. The mum story respected the surgeon and the scan while still building a progressive plan. The target is the automatic shutdown after bad news — not reckless loading.
