When Injury Stops Being Something You Have — and Becomes Who You Are

Become requires unbecome

Most people think growth is becoming — adding more, faster, stronger, moving better. But in order to become, we often must first unbecome.

That’s the open of Episode 3 — Unbecoming in Brick By Brick (You Were Never Meant To Stay Broken). Strip false identities, fear-based stories, and labels that keep you small — pruning before hustle.

The danger point

There is a point where an injury stops becoming something that you have and starts becoming something that you are.

Say it twice — the episode does. Once “injured” is who you are, the label starts running the show. The workbook names the trap intros: “the guy who could’ve gone pro,” “the dad with a bad back,” “the person who can’t.” Repeat them long enough and the world agrees — because you made it easy. Negativity attracts negativity. Rewrite the script: words → behaviour → identity → reality.

There isn’t enough room for the two of you.

Old identity and next identity can’t share the house.

Prune, chisel, don’t rebuild broken

  • Palm tree: prune what doesn’t serve so you can grow into who you were meant to be.
  • Marble figure: chisel away what isn’t you — shaping, not wishing.
  • House + “broken”: stop advertising the wound as the brand of the home you’re building.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is “unbecoming” in this episode?

Stripping away everything that doesn’t serve you anymore — false identities, fears, and the stories you’ve been telling yourself that keep you small — so you can become who you were meant to become.

When does an injury become dangerous for identity?

When it stops being something you have and starts being something you are. Mixing self with that label invites negativity — and negativity attracts negativity.

How do the whiteboard drawings fit?

Palm tree + scissors = prune what doesn’t serve. Marble + chisel = shape yourself. House marked “broken” = stop building with the same broken bricks.
