Fear, Doubt & Comparison After Injury: The Monsters Blocking Your Return to Sport
The monsters no one puts on the discharge sheet
Your physio says you're cleared. Your strength tests look good. Scan is clean. And yet — the first time you cut, sprint, or commit to a movement, something pulls you back. Not pain. Fear. Doubt. The voice comparing you to who you were before.
These are the monsters. And they're the subject of Week 6 in Brick By Brick: The Mountain Within.
Doubt, fear, and comparison — the unholy trinity
- Doubt whispers that you're not ready, even when the data says otherwise.
- Fear hijacks your nervous system before your brain catches up.
- Comparison measures today's you against pre-injury you — an unfair fight every time.
In sports physio across Cabramatta and Liverpool, we see athletes who are physically capable but psychologically guarded. They hold back 20% on every rep. They avoid the movement that caused the injury. They quit sessions early "just in case." That's not caution — that's the monsters running the show.
You don't need to feel fearless first
The biggest mistake in return-to-sport is waiting for confidence to arrive before you act. Confidence is built through graded exposure — small wins, repeated — not through thinking harder. Week 6 teaches you to move forward with fear present, not after it's gone.
If you're returning to running specifically, combine this with our 8-week return to running framework — one of our most-read guides. Physical progression plus mental framework is the combination that sticks.

When fear is the main blocker
If you've done the physio, passed the tests, and still can't pull the trigger — book a return-to-sport assessment. We'll check whether the barrier is physical (something missed) or psychological (the monsters). Often it's both, and both are fixable.

Coming soon: Evolve Online Rehab Academy
We're opening our Online Rehab Academy soon — a full recovery platform for people rebuilding after knee or low back injury. Brick By Brick handles the mindset and identity layer; the Academy is where guided physical recovery, coaching, and community come together.
Here's what we're building:
- 1-to-1 and group recovery calls — live support with practitioners who know your story, not a generic program and good luck.
- Knee and low back focus — tailored pathways for the two areas we treat most in clinic.
- Guided programs with coaching check-ins — your plan adjusts as you progress, with scheduled calls to review how you're tracking.
- A community that understands — people who know what setback feels like and want to support each other through it.
- Multiple practitioners, different niches — the right expertise for your goal, whether that's return to sport, work, or daily life without pain.
- A dedicated app — direct communication with your team, video demos of every exercise, consistency tracking, and a log for reps, sets, weights lifted, and notes after each recovery session.
Enrolments aren't open yet. If knee or back recovery is your priority, book a clinic assessment or contact us and mention the Online Rehab Academy — we'll let you know the moment we launch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is fear of re-injury normal after physio clears me?
Extremely. Physical clearance and psychological readiness often diverge. Many athletes are cleared on paper months before they trust their body again. That's a mindset problem, not a failure of rehab.
What's kinesiophobia?
It's an excessive, irrational fear of movement due to a belief that activity will cause re-injury. It's one of the strongest predictors of poor outcomes after ACL reconstruction and other serious injuries — often more than strength deficits alone.
How does Brick By Brick Week 6 help?
It names the internal obstacles — doubt, fear, comparison — and gives you a framework to move forward without waiting to feel 100% confident first. Action builds confidence; waiting for confidence keeps you stuck.
Should I use this alongside ACL or running rehab?
Yes. Pair Week 6 with structured physical rehab. Our return to running framework covers the physical side; Brick By Brick covers the mental side.
