NDIS Speech Pathology in Liverpool & Cabramatta: Helping Adults and Kids Communicate

Why speech pathology deserves more attention

When most families think of speech pathology they picture a child who "can't say their Rs." That's a tiny slice of what speech pathologists actually do. Our NDIS speech pathologist supports infants, children, adolescents and adults across Liverpool, Cabramatta, Fairfield and Bankstown with communication, language, literacy and swallowing — any of which can profoundly affect daily life, learning and relationships.

Speech Pathology Australia estimates that around 1.1 million Australians have a communication disability, and many more have a swallowing (dysphagia) problem. In Southwest Sydney specifically, speech pathology demand is high — partly because NDIS access is widespread, and partly because our community is one of the most linguistically diverse in the country.

What a speech pathologist treats

  • Speech — pronunciation, clarity, articulation, apraxia of speech
  • Language — understanding words and sentences, using vocabulary and grammar, narrative and problem-solving
  • Social communication — conversation, pragmatics, perspective-taking (often important for autistic children and adults)
  • Literacy — phonological awareness, reading and spelling difficulties (dyslexia-related)
  • Fluency — stuttering, cluttering
  • Voice — hoarseness, vocal nodules, voice after neurological injury
  • Feeding & swallowing — infant feeding difficulties, paediatric food aversion, adult dysphagia after stroke or progressive disease
  • AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) — speech-generating devices, picture systems, signing

Why Southwest Sydney is different

Liverpool and Cabramatta sit inside one of Sydney's most multicultural catchments. In many homes, English is not the first language — Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic, Assyrian, Hindi and Spanish are all common. This changes how good speech therapy is delivered. A strong speech pathologist in our region:

  • Assesses the child in all their home languages where possible, not just English
  • Recognises that bilingualism is an asset, not a cause of delay
  • Coaches parents to deliver therapy strategies in the home language so gains transfer
  • Works with interpreters where needed so families aren't excluded from decision-making

This is the lens we bring to every NDIS speech pathology case we take on.

Paediatric vs adult caseloads

With children we commonly work on late talking, developmental language disorder, articulation, autism-related communication and social skills, literacy intervention, and feeding. A lot of the therapy is parent-coaching, play-based sessions, and close links with early learning centres and schools in the Fairfield and Liverpool LGA.

With adults we commonly work on communication after stroke or acquired brain injury (aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria), progressive neurological disease (MND, Parkinson's, dementia-related language change), swallowing rehabilitation, and AAC implementation for people who can't reliably use speech.

How NDIS funds speech pathology

Speech pathology is funded under Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living. Initial assessments are typically 60–90 minutes and include history-taking, standardised testing where appropriate, and goal setting with the participant and family. From there we run 12-week blocks of weekly or fortnightly therapy with clear outcome measures and a written progress report at the end of each block.

Plan-managed and self-managed participants can book directly. Agency-managed participants need a registered provider — check with admin when you enquire.

How we run sessions

In-clinic (Cabramatta), at home, at school or preschool across Liverpool, Fairfield and Bankstown, or via telehealth. Telehealth is surprisingly effective for school-aged children and for adults working on articulation, language and AAC — and it removes the transport barrier entirely.

Getting started

Whether your child is a "late talker," your father has just had a stroke, or your daughter's school has raised concerns about literacy, a good first step is a conversation. Book an NDIS speech pathology assessment at Evolve Physio & Mastery and we'll map out what therapy could look like. We work alongside NDIS physiotherapy and exercise physiology when a multi-disciplinary approach makes sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a speech pathologist actually treat?

Four broad areas: speech (how sounds are produced), language (understanding and using words), social communication (conversation, pragmatics), and swallowing/feeding (dysphagia). Some also work with literacy, stuttering, and voice. One session may target one or several areas depending on goals.

My child is bilingual and a 'late talker.' Will speech therapy confuse them further?

No. There's strong evidence that growing up bilingual does not cause language delay, and bilingual children benefit from therapy in both languages where possible. In our Liverpool and Cabramatta community we regularly work with Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic and Assyrian-speaking families and tailor therapy around the home language.

Is speech pathology funded under the NDIS?

Yes. Speech pathology sits under Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living (line item 15_621_0128_1_3). Plan-managed and self-managed participants can access any qualified speech pathologist; agency-managed participants need a registered provider.

How long will my child be in speech therapy for?

It varies enormously. Mild articulation issues may resolve in 3–6 months of weekly therapy; more complex developmental language disorder, autism-related communication, or apraxia may need longer-term support with review blocks. We set goals every 12 weeks and only continue while there are clear outcomes.

Do you offer home visits or school visits?

Yes. We offer in-clinic, home, school and telehealth speech pathology across Liverpool, Cabramatta, Fairfield and Bankstown — whichever environment best supports generalisation of skills.
