Muay Thai Neck Pain: Clinch Wrestling, Spasm and Safe Return
The clinch is a neck sport
Arm control, head position battles and sudden directional changes load the cervical spine and supporting muscles in high repetition. The result is often protective spasm, not necessarily structural catastrophe — but the distinction matters, which is why assessment isn't optional.
Physio approach
We screen red flags, map irritability, treat relevant joint and soft-tissue restriction where safe, and rebuild endurance in the muscles that stabilise neutral alignment under load. We coordinate with coaches on technical tweaks when load alone explains the flare.

Mobility & performance workshops for martial arts clubs
Beyond 1:1 physio, we deliver mobility and performance workshops for strikers and grapplers — including a recent session with Sydney Uni Martial Arts Team (SUMT). We focus on mobility, strength, the injuries that actually show up in your sport, how to reduce and counteract risk with clear training principles, and how that feeds performance on the mats.
Watch the recap in our video library. To book a workshop or invite us to your gym, use the enquiry form on our workshops page — we'll get back to you with availability and how we can tailor the session.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is neck pain an emergency?
Severe trauma with neurological symptoms (numbness, weakness in limbs, bladder/bowel change), or sudden severe headache with neck stiffness needs emergency care — not online stretching advice.
Will neck strength fix it?
Often yes — deep neck flexor endurance, upper back strength and breathing mechanics matter — combined with smarter clinch volume progression.
Should I get manipulated?
Hands-on relief can help some people; high-velocity manipulation isn't for every irritable neck. We explain risks and alternatives.
How do I train clinch while sore?
Reduce height of pull, shorten rounds, avoid maximal plumb entries every night, and drill footwork-weight shifts instead of neck-only battles until tolerant.
Do you see only fighters?
No — but fighting populations benefit from someone who understands how your neck is actually loaded in sport.
